Colorado has poor soils and insufficient precipitation for most trees. High pH inhibits nutrient uptake. Low amounts of organic matter reduce the soils ability to hold water, nutrients and support soil microbiology. And the disturbance of soils for new construction creates even more problems.
After trying most of the industries plant health care products we have landed with a custom mixture from SoilBiotics.
We love their products and have had exceptional results rehabilitating stressed trees and establishing new plants. Our 'Soil Enhancement' mixture is applied via deep root injection so it is also a watering application. Great for any tree or plant.
Growth Boost - a liquid Humic Acid product that helps neutralize pH, inc. water retention, reduce leaching, inc. organic matter and CEC in the soil.
SB4400 - a mixture of beneficial microorganisms, nitrogen fixing, phosphate solubilizing, Non GMO and animal safe.
eFISHnt 5-1-2 - a fish emulsion providing a rich source of all natural slow release nutrients .
SB Super Sweet - a source of quick carbon consumption for the tree and for feeding soil microorganisms.

Newly planted trees and conifers or evergreens generally require supplemental watering at some point in the year. After planting, trees usually need three years to establish their root system, During this time special care must be taken to allocate the correct amount of watering. Newly planted or young conifers will also require supplemental watering through the winter as they remain active and irrigation systems are off.
Mature trees can also suffer from drought and heat stress. They may not show signs of stress immediately but extended drought stress often leads to disease, insect damage or mortality. E.g. Spruce suffering from drought stress are at a very high risk now of being infected by IPS spruce engraver beetle which usually leads to the removal of the tree.
Trees in grass lawns often receive enough water from sprinkler irrigation during the growing season. If the grass is removed to switch to a xeriscaping or drought tolerant native plant design the tree will suffer from the loss of sprinkler irrigation and require additional watering. Mulching with wood chips, not bark mulch, is a good way to help retain moisture in the soil and improve soil quality.
